Abstract : Space-time block coding (STBC) is a method that combines diversity and coding without acorresponding increase in bandwidth and with little complexity in the receiver structures,thus making it an ideal candidate for improving wireless communication performance andincreasing data rates in systems with bandwidth constraints. The performance of STBCusing a Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signal constellation has been shown toprovide approximately 10 dB of improvement over the case of uncoded (QPSK)transmission in Rayleigh fading at a bit error rate of 10-3. However, this performance wasshown under the assumption that perfect channel state information (CSI) was available atthe receiver. In this thesis, the performance of space-time block codes is analyzed whenthe receiver must rely on noisy, or imperfect, estimates of the channel.
