Abstract	:	This thesis compares the performance of two methods currently used in industryto overcome input, output, and head-of-line blocking in third generation packet switchedgigabit routers. The widely accepted method uses virtual output queuing whereby a set ofvirtual queues is maintained at each input port for each output port of the router. Oneindustry leader claims blocking can be eliminated without the use of virtual outputqueuing if the switch fabric is run at 1.66 times the speed of each of its ports. Theanalysis provided by this industry leader was based on network trafEc uniformlydistributed over all ports.
