Abstract
:
This paper presents both the theoretical and the practical aspects of phase-locked loop(PLL) design. Various component architectures were investigated, and two complete PLLs weredesigned; one single-ended, the other differential. A comparison of the performance of the twoshowed that the differential PLL has a much better phase noise characteristic. As a consequenceof this result, a fully integrated 1.8GHz differential ring-oscillator based PLL was built using apure CMOS process.
