Abstract : The Center for Self-Organizing and Intelligent Systems (CSOIS) is developingautonomous ground vehicles for use in farming applications. CSOIS has targetedobstacle detection and avoidance as key challenges in real-world implementation ofautonomous fanning vehicles. A range sensor, giving real-time updates of thesurrounding environment, performs obstacle detection. Obstacle avoidance isaccomplished through a combination of global and Iocal avoidance subsystems that dealwith both known and unknown obstacles in the operating area of the vehicle.
