Abstract	:	A real-time, multi-wavelength instrument (MDI) has been developed for microbedetection on surfaces and in fluids. Based upon intrinsic microbial fluorescent markers,MDI detects the presence of - 10 cells in a 2-cm2 interrogation area in fluids and onsurfaces, such as meats/poultry, surgical tools, and other sterile surfaces. Contact withthe sample is not necessary for detection. Four intrinsic fluorescent markers are usedsimultaneously to determine the presence, quantity, and metabolic state (live/dead) of themicrobial contamination.
