Abstract : The question of how we can best supply humanity's growing energy needs with the leastadverse impact on the environment is one that arises often. Dependence on fossil fuels isnot the answer due to their limited quantity and polluting nature. Renewable energysources are the answer. One of these sources that has not undergone as much research asothers is Solar Power Satellites (SPS). The SPS concept involves collecting solar powerusing large solar collectors on satellites in orbit and beaning this power via microwavesto receiving stations on earth where it is convened to energy that is usable in aconventional power grid. There are two major SPS system concepts - NASA's ReferenceSystem and the SPS 2000 System. This thesis examines the overall energy efficiency ofboth systems in detail and provides comparison between the two.
