Abstract	:	Transparent Active Network Attack Detection. and Identification of an infiltratoris performed by an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). The Intrusion detection systemapplied in this thesis consists of an Optical Data Systems (ODs) SecureDetectorrunning Internet Security Systems' (ISS) Realsecure software. The transparentisolation of an attacker fiom the system under attack (SUA) is achieved by placing agateway between the two. The gateway provides the means by which packets, tioman attacker, are covertly diverted fiom the SUA to a "Honey Pot", which is a machinewhose purpose is to lure attackers into revealing information about themselves. Theperformance of this system is determined by the transparency of the defensivemeasures incorporated within it.
