Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to investigate the effectiveness of the coordinated design ofpower system stabilizers and FACTS-based stabilizers to improve power system transientstability. Three power systems are studied: a single-machine-infinite-bus system withFirst Generation (GI) FACTS devices, a single-machine infinite-bus system with aUPFC, and a multimachine power system. To estimate the controllability of eachstabilizer control signal on the electromechanical modes, singular value decomposition isemployed. In each system, the problem of designing all the stabilizers, PSSs and FACTS-based stabilizers, individually is formulated as an optimization problem. Particle swarmoptimizer is utilized to search for the optimum stabilizer parameter settings that optimizea given eigenvalue-based objective function.
