Abstract : Current actuation technology does not possess the energy and power densityrequired for a human scale, self-powered robot to perform external work for extendedperiods of time. Battery-powered DC motors are one of the most widely used actuationsystems in robotics. The control of DC motors is well understood and they areconveniently packaged. However, the weight of the batteries required for a human scale,self-powered robot to perform work over an extended time period is a major limitationfor this technology. The most advanced human-scale, self-powered robot in existence isthe Honda Motor Corporation model P3, shown in Figure 1-1. This robot has a totalmass of 130 kg (285 lb), of which 30 kg (66 1b) are nickel-zinc batteries.
