Abstract : Social scientists frequently assess factors thought to underlie behavior for the purpose ofdesigning behavioral change interventions. Researchers commonly identify these factorsby examining relationships between specific variables and the focal behaviors beinginvestigated. Variables nit11 the strongest relationships to the focal behavior are thenassumed to be the most influential determinants of that beliakior. and therefore oftenbecome the targets for change in a behakioral cliange interkention. In the currentproposal. multiple methods are used to compare the effectiveness of tm o theoreticalframemorlts for identifying influential motikational factors. Assessing the relatheinfluence of all factors and sets of factors for driking beliavior should clarifj mhichframemorlt and methodology is the most promising for identifj ing effectike changetargets.
