Abstract : Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer many advantages over conventional powerstations, such as high efficiency and low pollution. Perovskite-type oxides (AB03) find agreat variety of applications in SOFCs, including the solid electrolyte (pure ionicconductor), cathode (mixed ionic and electronic conductor) and interconnect (pureelectronic conductor). Different electrical properties are achieved by engineering dopingschemes on A and/or B sites and are thus closely related to the defect chemistry.Thermodynamic studies are needed to systematically understand the nature of thestructure-property relations and provide guidance to predict and/or select proper materialsfor SOFCs.
