Abstract : An entropy-constrained rejlected residual vector quantization (EC-RRVQ) designalgorithm, its zntroduced as an alternative to entropy-con,.strain.ed residua,l lector quan,-tization (EC-RVQ) and used t o design codebooks for image coding. EC-RRVQ is ableto realzze a more ordered or less random codebook, that oflers two advantages. Thefirst is that an, ordered codebook have lowe output entropy while the second has t o dowith simplifying the search procedure used to find the best codeword. The idea dis-cussed zn this work is t o int.roduce EC-RRVQ as a new b a s e h e quantzzatzon sch,emewith single-path search and improved rate-distortion performance, whzch if joznedwith othxr tra,n,sform, and subban,d codin,g m,eth,ods will result in, n, competitive de-sign. Because of single-path search, the EC-RRVQ bars the potential t o be a serzouscontender in the list of large block vector quantzzation implementation algorithms.Experim,ental results zndzcate that good im,age reproduction qualzty can be a,ccom-plzshed at rela,tively low bit rates.
