Abstract	:	Telecommunication plays a very important role in the eض‍ective monitoring andcontrol of the power grid. Deregulation of the US power industry has enabled utilities toexplore various communication options and advanced technologies. Utilities are increasinglyinvesting in distributed resources, dynamic real-time monitoring, automated meter reading,and value added services like home energy management sytems and broadband access forits customers.Telecommunication options like power line communications (PLC) and satellitesare fast replacing legacy telephone and microwave systems in the US. Many utilities areshowing interest in PLC technology for its use in parametric communications and homebroadband access. PLC technology is not new, tracing its roots back to the 1920's and theearly days of electriطcation. However, only until recently, PLC was only capable of transportingjust a few bits per second. But all this is changing as communication technologydevelops.
