Abstract : The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention onClimate Change (UNFCCC) is designed to achieve the dual objectives of providing cheaperemissions abatement options to developed countries while assisting developing countries inpromoting sustainable development. The success of the mechanism will depend on the success ofthese two objectives. However, there are often tradeoffs between achieving low costs andsustainable development, with sustainability given the lower priority in most cases. Moreover,due to the lack of innovative renewable energy powered applications, small-scale renewableenergy projects are underrepresented and the global geographic distribution unbalanced. One ofthe key challenges facing engineers and planners is to design renewable energy projects in such away that they are cost competitive, with sustainable development benefits that are clearlyunderstood.
