Abstract	:	Network processors are specialized integrated circuits to process packets in the net-work equipments. Internet traffic is continuing to double each year since 1997. Allemerging network applications are computation-intensive. As network applicationsare becoming more sophisticated and internet traffic is getting heavier, future networkprocessors must continue processing computation-intensive network applications atline rates. Most programmable network processors on the market today target lowperformance. However, low cost edge routers will find it hard to cope with the forth-coming sophistication of network applications to be processed at line rates.
