Abstract	:	Quantifying the spatial and temporal scales over which ecological processesare coupled to environmental variability is a major challenge for ecologists. Here, Iassimilate patterns of oceanographic variability with ecological field studies in anattempt to quantifL spatial and temporal scales of coupling. Using coastal time seriesof chlorophyll-a concentration from remote sensing, the first chapter examines thealongshore extent of coastal regions subject to similar temporal patterns ofoceanographic variability in Western North America (WNA) and North-CentralChile (Chile).
