Abstract : Delta-Sigma A/D converters (ADC) can achieve high resolutions with relativelysimple circuit complexity and by using low precision analog components, being nowa-days the preferred approach for low and medium frequency applications. Delta-Sigmamodulator (the core of the Delta-Sigma ADC) can be implemented either by usingdiscrete-time circuitry or by using continuous-time one. Compared to discrete-timeones, continuous-time Delta-Sigma modulators can operate at higher sampling frequen-cies, consume less power, and provide implicit anti-alias filtering. In space applications, an ADC must satisfy, besides the requirements of widebandwidth and high resolution, additional ones concerning radiation hardness. Amongall radiation effects in electronic circuits, probably the most difficult to characterize aresingle event effects (SEEs). Depending on the type of the circuit hit (digital or analog)and on the energy of the striking particle, one can have different effects induced bySEEs.Silicon on insulator (SOI) CMOS technology can achieve higher operation speedand lower power dissipation than traditional bulk CMOS processes with its specialstructure and technical advantages. One distinct advantage of SO1 CMOS is its radia-tion hardness compared to bulk CMOS, which makes it desirable in space and militaryapplicationsThe research effort within this thesis is focused on developing a class of SO1 CMOSmixed-signal systems, specifically DeltacSigma A/D converters, to be used in radio re-ceivers for space communications. Besides trying to meet the technical specificationsrequired by space communication systems (resolution, bandwidth, operating tempera-ture range), our efforts are directed towards implementing the circuits for low-powerand radiation hardness (with a special emphasis on characterizing and reducing theSEEs). A prototype fourth-order single-bit continuous-time Delta-Sigma modulatoris designed and implemented in a 0.35pm SO1 CMOS process from Honeywell. Bothspecification and radiation experimental results are presented. To achieve higher reso-lution and wider bandwidth, a fifth-order 5-bit continuous-time Delta3igma modulatoris designed in Honeywell's 0.35pm SO1 CMOS process. Its circuit-level simulation re-sults are presented. Finally SEEs in the continuous-time Delta-Sigma modulator areanalyzed based on a novel SEEs model....,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
