Abstract : There has been considerable attention paid to developing 'smart' airbags that candetermine, not only, if they should be deployed in a crash event, but also with what forcethey should be deployed. Information on the size and type of front passenger seatoccupant is used to determine the safe level of force with which to deploy the airbag. Todate vision systems have been success~lly applied to relatively controlled environments,such as for manufacturing, or they have been used in uncontrolled environments, such asfor surveillance, where there is a human in the loop to monitor the performance of thesystem.In this thesis we have developed a computer vision-based approach to airbag.,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
