Abstract	:	The reliability of the electric power system, defined as the degree of performanceof the grid according to accepted standards, is composed of two components:1 . Security: The ability of the electric system to withstand sudden disturbancessuch as electric short circuits or unanticipated loss of system elements.2. Adequacy: The ability of the electric system to supply the aggregate electricaldemand and energy requirements of the customers at all times, taking intoaccount scheduled and reasonably expected unscheduled outages of systemelements.There is evidence that the performance of the adequacy component of reliability isdeclining in North America.
