Abstract	:	Studies of major blackouts reveal that power system protection devices havecontributed to a majority of system disturbances. This leads to efforts of improvingprotection philosophy.Analysis shows that conventioml protection relies on coordination among stand-alone relays to obtain a dependabilitybiased component-protection scheme. Whereas it ismore desirable and also feasible nowadays for an integrated approach to both component andsystem protection, provided modern relays possessing the ability of sharing information andapplying intelligence in decision making.This dissertation proposes the adaptive protection concept for wide area systems. Thescope of the research includes identifying a d developing the desired architecture, intelligentalgorithms and communication needs that facilitate the protection system to avoid and reducethe impact of system emergencies.The purpose of this research work is to conceptualize and nurture adaptive protectionconcept for wide area systems, and to conduct feasibility,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
