Abstract : Transient performance is a key characteristic of fuel cells, that is sometimes morecritical than efficiency, due to the importance of accepting unpredictable electricloads. To fulfill the transient requirement in vehicle propulsion and portable fuel cellapplications, a fuel cell stack is typically coupled with a battery through a DC/DCconverter to form a hybrid power system. Although many power management strate-gies already exist, they all rely on low level controllers that realize the power split.In this dissertation we design controllers that realize various power split strategiesby directly manipulating physical actuators (low level commands). We maintain thecausality of the electric dynamics (voltage and current) and investigate how the elec-tric architecture affects the hybridization level and the power management.We first establish the performance limitations associated with a stand-alone andpower-autonomous fuel cell system that is not supplemented by an additional energystorage and powers all its auxiliary components by itself.
