Abstract : In the first part of this dissertation, a shallow cyclonic circulation that occurs in thesummer time over the Monterey Bay is investigated. Since it is often centered offshore fromthe city of Santa Cruz and it has never been studied in detail before, it is named "SantaCruz Eddy" (SCE) in this study. Its horizontal size is 10-40 km and its vertical extent100-200 m. The Santa Cruz eddy is important for local weather because it causes surfacewinds along the Santa Cruz coast to blow from the east instead of from the north-west,the latter being the climatological summer pattern for this area. As a consequence of theeddy, cool and moist air is advected from the south and south-east into the Santa Cruzarea, bringing both relief from the heat and fog to the city.The SCE is unique in its high frequency of occurrence. Most vortices along the WesternAmerican coast form only during unusual weather events, whereas the SCE forms 75-79 of the days during the summer. The SCE frequency was determined after analyzing twoyears of data with three methods (the first one based on wind direction at three stationsonly, and the other two based on Empirical Orthogonal Functions,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
