Abstract : The motivation for this thesis is the importance of understanding sulfates on Mars.Sulfur is known to exist in large quantities in the soil at the Viking and Pathfinder landingsites (Toulrnin et al. 1977, Clark et al. 1982, Rieder et al. 1997) and is likely in the formof sulfates (Toulmin et al. 1977). However, their existence and distribution beyond theselocations is not known well, being inferred from thermophysical data and its correlationwith density, color, and hydration state in specific regions on Mars (Jakosky andMuhleman 1981, Arvidson et al. 1982, Jakosky and Christensen 1986, Presley andArvidson 1988, Arvidson et al. 1989, Christensen and Moore 1992). Understanding thedistribution, abundance, and nature of sulfates in the martian soil can give insights intothe processes that formed and modified the soil. Therefore, this thesis attempts to addressthese issues and search for sulfates on a global basis using relatively high resolutionremote sensing data from Mars.Chapter 1 discusses the background needed to effectively,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
