Abstract : Biological brains are extremely good at generating flexible behavior and managing limitedresources of time and materials in demanding environments. Our artificial systems haveyet to match the capabilities of even very simple biological brains. We are beginning tounderstand that biological brains belong to the class of nonlinear dynamical systems, andthat nonlinear dynamics play a fundamental role in the self-organization of the cognitivemechanisms that produce such flexible and adaptive behavior.
