Abstract : General anesthetics produce an unconscious state [66]. In this state, a person isunaware of what is happening (hypnosis), pain-free (analgesia) and immobile (mus-cle relaxation). Adequate anesthesia can be defined as a reversible pharmacologicalstate where the patients muscle relaxation, analgesia and hypnosis are guaranteed.Anesthesiologists administer drugs and adjust several medical devices to achieve suchgoals and to compensate for the effect of surgical manipulation while maintaining thevital functions of the patient. Figure 1 depicts the Input/Ouput representation of theanesthesia problem. The components of an adequate anesthesia are labeled "unmea-surable" because they must be assessed by correlating them to available physiological..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
