Abstract : Bats have long fascinated both scientists and engineers due to their superbability to use echolocation to fly with speed and agility through complex natural environmentsin complete darkness. This dissertation presents a neuromorphic VLSIcircuit model of bat azimuthal echolocation. Interaural level dierences (ILDs) arethe cues for bat azimuthal echolocation and are also the primary cues used by othermammals to localize high frequency sounds. The fact that neurons in bats respondto short echoes by one or two spikes strongly suggests that the conventionally usedfiring rate is an unlikely code. The operation of first spike latency in ILD computationand transformation is investigated in a network of spiking neurons linkingthe lateral superior olive (LSO), dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL),..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
