Abstract : In past years, the conventional practice in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) hasbeen to reconstruct images while ignoring the effects of anatomical motion in the patient.When motion is ignored, a PET scanner acts something like a conventional optical camerawith the shutter open: one obtains the superposition of images of the object as it appearsin various phases of motion. Thus, the image exhibits a degree of blur that is related tothe motion magnitude. Until recently, the drawbacks of ignoring object motion has beenignored due to limitations in the spatial resolution of early PET scanners. The magnitudeof anatomical motion was not always substantial enough, in comparison to the scannerresolution, for motion correction to promise any benefit. However, with the improvementof scanner resolution over time, motion-related blur is becoming a limiting factor in theresolution achievable in PET reconstruction.This problem has been compounded by changing trends in the application of PET.
