Abstract : The tern direc; interaction has been applied to mouse-based desklop interaction systems despitethe indirect nature of moving an in ut device at one location to modify an electronic cursor at adifferent location. The concept of directly mediated interaction is developed to define a modalityof interaction that truly incorporates the concept of directly working with electronic data. Thegoals of supporting pointing and manipulation interactions from outside the compter interactionspace and using them for electronic data manipu8ation are presented. A unique environmentcalled HI-SPACE Enhanced was created. The ideals s f directly mediated interaction are used todrive the functionality of MI-SPACE Enhanced; the hnctionality extends well beyond the aspectsof directly mediated interaction studied here. Fundamental algorithms and routines for HI-SPACE Enhanced are presented and support fbnctionaiity suc as finger tracking, poserecognition, object tracking, and group interaction. The innovative approaches to the creation ofHI-SPACE Enhanced are evaluated to direct fi~ture research activities. The potential benefits ofdirectly mediated interaction as an input techology are explored and compared to rhefunctionality of a mouse, the de facto standard input technology in use today. Directly mediatedinteractions are shown not to depend on an electronic cursor to reference positions of interest inan electronic space. Rather, the physical pointing device, such as a hand, sewes that role.
