Abstract	:	The Kenyan section of the East African rift has been among the most studied rift zones in the world. It is characterized by 1m topographic deep valleys in the rift zone, 2c sheer escarpments along the faulted walls of the rift valley, 3d voluminous amounts of volcanic rocks that have flowed from faults along the sides of the rift, and 4 volcanic cones where magma flow was most intense. The rift faults preferentially formed in an area where the lithosphere weakened and stretched by Paleogene extension in northern Kenya and old zones of weakness at the contact between the Archean Tanzania craton and the Proterozoic Mozambique Orogenic belt in central and southern Kenya.
