Abstract : Complex dynamical systems are subjected to failure modes that tend to reduceuptime and present major challenges to maintainers. Initiatives, such as Condition-BasedMaintenance (CBM) have addressed these challenges by proposing diagnostic systemswith prognostic capabilities. As a result of these developments many architectures havebeen designed to perform diagnostics and prognostics on centralized and distributedsystems. Due to the ad hoc and specific nature of design and implementation of thesearchitectures, they are difficult to port, inefficient to scale, and hard to maintain. Anothersource of the problem is the variability of the problem domain itself. Hence in large-scalesystems, failures do not usually happen in identical manner. Moreover, the statisticalinformation is also either not available or too conservative. A conceptual aspect is thatalthough some of these systems are designed for decentralized domains, the knowledgebase and control of the architectures remain centralized.The shortcomings of the current systems stem from the limitations of theirframeworks. The framework is typically designed on the passive, open loop, static, andisolated notions of diagnostics. In essence, the framework does not observe its diagnosticresults (open-looped), hence can not improve its performance (static).
