Abstract : Flywheel batteries are machines that store kinetic energy in the form of a rotatingflywheel. Energy is transferred to and from the flywheel via a motor-generator mountedon the flywheel rotor. For mobile systems in particular, it is important to maximize thestored energy while minimizing the mass and volume of the flywheel battery. Thisrequirement leads to the use of high rotational speeds which in turn necessitates the useof composite materials for flywheel construction, magnetic bearings for reduced wear andfriction losses, and a low pressure environment to reduce windage losses. With the flywheel rotor suspended on magnetic bearings and operating in a partialvacuum, radiation becomes the primary heat transfer mode for removing losses incurredon the rotor. Radiative heat transfer from the rotor to the flywheel battery housing islimited by the relatively low maximum.tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
