Abstract : iiiThis thesis focuses on the use of high pressure NMR to study transport properties inelectrolyte membranes used for fuel cells. The main concern is in studying the selfdiffusioncoefficients of ions and molecules in membranes and solutions, which can beused to characterize electrolytes in fuel cells. For this purpose, a high-pressure fringefield NMR method to study transport properties in material systems useful for fuel celland battery electrolytes, was designed, developed, and implemented.In this investigation, pressure is the thermodynamic variable to obtain additionalinformation about the ionic transport process, which could yield the crucial parameter,activation volume.
