Abstract : Spatial resolution of any far field optical systems is limited by the diffraction limit;to achieve spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit, we must make use ofevanescent waves in the near field around objects with deep sub-wavelength dimensions.A traditional way to achieve such high resolution is to use a sub-wavelength aperture in ametallic plate, in which the spatial resolution is generally determined by the aperture size.High spatial resolution is extremely important for applications such as nano-microscopyand spectroscopy, ultra-high density optical data storage, single molecule detection,single quantum dot applications, nano-particle studies, etc. Unfortunately, a conventionalsmall aperture has a devastating problem of extremely low transmission. This lowtransmission problem greatly hinders the application of small apertures for solvingsignificant problems. In 2001, Dr. Xiaolei Shi et. al. proposed a C shaped single aperturedesign that under certain irradiation conditions can achieve high spatial resolution (A11 0)with near field intensity and power throughput orders of magnitude greater than those ofa square or circular aperture with the same spot size.tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
