Abstract : Parallel hybrid-electric propulsion systems would be beneficial for small unmanned aerialvehicles (UAVs) used for military, homeland security, and disaster-monitoring missions.The benefits, due to the hybrid and electric-only modes, include increased time-on-stationand greater range as compared to electric-powered UAVs and stealth modes not availablewith gasoline-powered UAVs. This dissertation contributes to the research fields ofsmall unmanned aerial vehicles, hybrid-electric propulsion system control, and intelligentcontrol in the following areas:1n Conceptual Design of a Hybrid-Electric UAV: A conceptual design of asmall UAV with a parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system is provided. TheUAV is intended for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)missions. The conceptual design reveals the trade-offs that must be considered totake advantage of the hybrid-electric propulsion system. The resulting hybrid-electric propulsion system is a two-point design that includes an engine primarilysized for cruise speed and an electric motor and battery pack that are primarilysized for endurancetested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
