Abstract : This dissertation focused on assessing patterns of carbonate production in amarginal reef environment as the key to understand the mechanisms that limitmodem reef distribution, and those that effect the response of coral reefs to achanging environment. This investigation was carried out at Kure atoll in theNorthwestern Hawaiian Islands, the northernmost atoll in the world. A less detailedcomparative study was carried out throughout the 10 Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, with the goal of revisiting Grigg's (1 982) Darwin Point hypothesis on the limit ofcoral reef formation.Patterns of carbonatetested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
