Abstract	:	This dissertation focused on assessing patterns of carbonate production in amarginal reef environment as the key to understand the mechanisms that limitmodem reef distribution, and those that effect the response of coral reefs to achanging environment. This investigation was carried out at Kure atoll in theNorthwestern Hawaiian Islands, the northernmost atoll in the world.
