Abstract : I would like to acknowledge my Ph.D. advisor, John H.Holland, for his helpthroughout my PhD career as both a source of inspiration and insights, for encouragingme to find and pursue my own research topic rather than choosing one for me, and forbeing one of the few people who truly shares my interest and passion for multiple andinterdisciplinary fields of science and engineering, which has made him the best Ph.D.advisor I could possibly hope for. I would also like to thank the members of my Ph.D.committee, Bill Birmingham, Ed Durfee and Shuichi Takayama as well as MikeSavageau, Rick Riolo, Bob Lindsay, and Leeann Fu for their insightful discussions andfeedback.
