Abstract : Magnetic force microscopy, with in situ magnetic fields and a novel probe, has been usedto study how two separate modifications influence the confined magnetic vortex structurein magnetically soft particles. The samples were fabricated with specially adaptedprocessing techniques and the particles, which were patterned into arrays, have sizes onthe order of hundreds of nanometers. The first modification is the addition of adeposition induced, uniaxial anisotropy energy to cylindrically shaped particles ofvarying diameters and constant thickness. The anisotropy energy has a symmetry axiswhich aligns with the cylinder axis. Domain patterns are observed that are unique tovortex structures in cylindrical particles.
