Abstract	:	The objective of this thesis is to generate a time series of maps showing thesimulated distribution of forest cover in Central America from 1880 to 2000 in ten-year -intervals. The starting date of 1880 was chosen to agree with previous studies using similarmethods and sources of data (Pontius, 1994; Qi, 1994; Richards and Flint, 1994). Estimatesof the amount of forest cover present for each point in time--1 880, 1890, 1900, etc--wereobtained from existing spatial and non-spatial data or were extrapolated from the forestcover data for each country. Non-spatial data were obtained fiom the FA0 for the period1961 to 1994. Spatial data were obtained for 1920 from Zon and Sparhawk (1923) by.
