Abstract : Rhetoricians of science are constantly confronted with certain recurringquestions about their field: To what extent and in what ways is there a rhetoricalcomponent to scientific knowledge? Can particdar scientific fields be identified withcharacteristic lines of argument and patterns of persuasion? In ArguingArt@cially, I seek answers to these questions by offering a rhetorical analysis of threekey moments of debate in the history of artificial intelligence research that areepitomized in several key documents:.
