Abstract	:	A new method to alter the energy levels of a quantum well structure is proposed.An energy barrier between two naked quantum wells modifies the coupling of the twowells. Changing the width of the barrier alters the energy of the electron states. Theproposed test structure consists of collapsed silicon nitride microcantilevers whichbring the initially separated quantum wells into contact. The width of the air gapbetween the cantilever and the substrate varies between a few Angstroms and a fewhundred Angstroms. Scanning a laser beam along the cantilever reveals how the energyof the electron states of the coupled quantum wells change as a function of the barrierwidth. This thesis examines the shape of the.
