Abstract : When planning long duration space missions, radiation effects due to large solar particleevents (SPEs) can become a major concern. As time in space increases, the chancethat a measurable amount of dose is received from a SPE also increases. Therefore, aprediction mechanism for SPEs needs to be in place, which allows spacecraft operatorsto estimate the time until certain doses are reached following the onset of one of theseevents. Typical dose-time profiles of these events exhibit a Weibull functional form,which can be described by three fitting parameters. Since the profiles are nonlinear, theuse of neural networks to approximate the profiles is ideal. The purpose of this researchis to use neural networks to forecast the dose-time profiles of SPEs.A network set comprised of.
