Abstract	:	The research that is the subject of this dissertation is about the managementof reactive power and voltage support in the wholesale open access power markets inthe United States (US). The purpose of this research is to place decisions about openaccess market structures, as they relate to reactive power and voltage control, on alogical and consistent economic basis, given the engineering needs of a commercialelectric power system. An examination of the electricity markets operating in the UStoday reveals that current approaches to reactive power management and voltagesupport are extensions of those based on historical, regulated monopoly electric service..
