Abstract : Inspired by the exceptional flight capabilities of flying insects, the UC Berkeley MicromechanicalFlying Insect (MFI) project entails the development of a flapping wing micro aerialvehicle that will be capable of sustained autonomous flight. It has a target size of 25mmwing span and a mass of 100mg. Biological principles are used for actuation, transmission,sensing, and control of the MFI so that the device will exhibit the same performance meritsas those observed in real flying insects.This dissertation.
