Abstract	:	Wireless Sensor Networks are formed by small battery-powered devices that combinesensors, microprocessors, and radios used to communicate with each other; therebyenabling the monitoring and control of various physical systems. Due to severe re-source constraints efficient resource allocation has emerged as a critical coiicerii a i dmotivates the work in this thesis.The first topic studied is that of devising energy-aware transmission and routingpolicies for large-scale wireless sensor networks. The problem is formulated as max-imizing a utility function of transmissions subject to fairness constraints. A noveldecomposition method is proposed and is shown to converge in finite time to a policythat is asymptotically optimal in the regime of low transmission power levels. It isalso established that the utility maximization problem is solvable in polynomial time.The proposed framework can handle network lifetime constraints and accommodatenode failures.The second topic concerns the development of a capability for sensor networks todetermine the physical location of their nodes.
