Abstract : The Compact Toroid Injection experiment, (CTIX), is a coaxial railgun that forms and acceleratesmagnetized plasma rings called compact toroids (CT's). CTIX consists of a pair of cylindrical coaxialelectrodes with the region between them kept a t high w u u m (2 m long, 15 cm outer diameter).Hydrogen is typically the dominant constituent of the CT plasma, however helium can also be used.The railgun effect that accelerates the CT can be accounted for by the Lorentz j x B force densitycreated by the power input from a capacitor bank of roughly a Giga-Watt peak. The final velocityof the C T can be as high as 300 km/s, with an acceleration of about 3 billion times Earth's gravity.The compact toroid is able to withstand these forces because of a large internal magnetic field ofabout 1 Tesla.Understanding the nature of high.
