Abstract	:	In November 1998, in the middle of the field research period for this study. 1 had opportunityto attend the sale of farm implements and stock on a farm in the north-west of the GraaffReinet district. The event was undertaken to generate capital prior to the sale of the hrmitself. and many of the local district hrmers came to inspect stock. vehicles, machinery andequipment as they were auctioned off by a local Graaff Reinet auctioneer.The rainy season had finally commenced. after a markedly dry spring. and although summerwas approaching, the day was cold with a constant drizzle.
