Abstract	:	The reduction in computational and hardware costs coupled with increased energycosts have driven manufacturers to consider inverter driven permanent magnet machinesin applications. To further reduce cost, high-resolution mechanical sensors are replacedwith low-resolution sensors or are entirely eliminated. Key issues in the implementationand limitation of these techniques include the signal-to-noise ratio of the positiondependent signal, the inaccuracies of the remaining sensor circuitry, the bandwidth anddisturbance rejection of the position estimation and the effects quantization has onefficiency and disturbance rejection. This thesis presents methodologies addressing thesefundamental sensing issues..
