Abstract	:	This dissertation looks into the reasons that pushed European countries to liberalizetheir electricity industries. The analysis of the political process leadmg to that decision in theareas pioneers of regulatory reform in t h s sector Kingdom, Sweden and theEuropean Commissionn shows that the liberalization of the European power sectors doesnot conform to the traditional theoretical explanations for regulatory reform that putinterests and industry-specific considerations at the forefront of the explanation. The centralargument of this dissertation is that, contrary to what most of the literature assumes and thetheories predict, the primary impetus for the reforms in European electricity sectors &d not.
