Abstract	:	In order to develop intellectual expertise, a novice learner has to acquire cognitiveabilities seen in experts: They need to be able to categorize problems before solvingthem, and be meta-cognitive about their learning, so that they can select the bestproblem-solving strategies. The process by which learners acquire these abilities isnot well understood. The goal of this dissertation is to understand how instructionaldelivery methods can help learners acquire the cognitive abilities necessaryto become experts.
