Abstract : In this work, Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) have been used both asactuators in designing underwater propulsors, and as transducers for energy harvesting.The underwater application of segmented IPMCs was examined using computersimulations, and the concept of using IPMCs for energy harvesting applications wasproven through experimental verification.The form and viscous drag as well as the inertial forces experienced by the IPMCwhen actuated underwater have been modeled and incorporated into a small deflectionmodel for the segmented IPMC. The displacement of the IPMC decreases slightly whenfluid forces are introduced. For low input voltage amplitudes, when the IPMC is actuatedto create an اSب shape larger thrust values.
